THE FIRST REACH — Early years of human expansion beyond Earth

Hand-drawn planning map · White rectangles on orbital rings = Orbiting Stations · Dots on bodies = Surface Habitats · Blue = Small · Green = Medium · Red = Large

SMALL · Under 1,000
MEDIUM · 1,000 – 5,000
LARGE · 5,000+
Inner Solar System
Me
Mercury
First planet · 0.39 AU
No settlements
No habitats or stations established. Extreme thermal conditions make settlement impractical in The First Reach era.
V
Venus
Second planet · 0.72 AU
1 station
Venus — Forward Science
Orbital research station. Not a community habitat but a scientific outpost studying Venusian atmosphere and conditions. Likely crewed on rotation rather than permanent residency.
SMALL
ORBITAL
Mo
The Moon
Earth's natural satellite · 0.0026 AU from Earth
2 stations
Moon Habitat — Helium-3
Surface habitat built around Helium-3 mining operations. He-3 is a critical fuel source for fusion power throughout The First Reach. A working community of engineers, miners, and families. Not just an outpost.
MEDIUM
SURFACE
Moon — Fuel Station
Orbital refueling depot above the Moon. Processes He-3 lifted from the surface and supplies outbound ships heading deeper into the solar system. Strategic chokepoint for all inner-to-outer system travel.
SMALL
ORBITAL
Ma
Mars
Fourth planet · 1.52 AU · Most developed frontier world
3 stations
Mars — Colony
The first and largest surface settlement on Mars. A full community: permanent residents, schools, infrastructure. The most mature frontier habitat beyond Earth orbit in The First Reach era.
LARGE
SURFACE
Mars — 2nd Colony
Second Martian surface settlement, still growing. Likely established after the First Colony proved the model worked. Separate location, possibly more specialized in agriculture, manufacturing, or resource extraction.
MEDIUM
SURFACE
Mars — Fuel Station
Orbital refueling depot above Mars. Critical waypoint for ships continuing outward to the Belt, Jupiter, and beyond. Mirrors the Moon Fuel Station's role. The solar system's infrastructure relies on these nodes.
SMALL
ORBITAL
The Belt · 2.2 – 3.2 AU
Ce
Ceres — Belt HQ
Dwarf planet · Asteroid Belt · Primary Belt foothold
1 station
Ceres — Belt Headquarters
The administrative and operational hub for all Belt activity. Currently classified Large, but this is under revision. A Medium classification may better reflect the early state of Belt settlement at the start of Book One. Growth to Large is inevitable as the Belt economy matures.
LARGE
SURFACE
UNDER REVISION — Consider downgrading Ceres Belt HQ to MEDIUM for Book One. The Belt is still early-stage. Growth to LARGE across the series arc gives the setting room to breathe and expand.
Outer Solar System
Ju
Jupiter
Fifth planet · 5.2 AU · Gas giant · Outer system anchor
1 station
Jupiter — Kalpana One
The most remote large habitat in The First Reach. A full Kalpana-class cylinder in Jovian orbit, the proof that permanent large-scale human presence in the outer solar system is possible. A bold, expensive, prestigious posting.
LARGE
ORBITAL
Sa
Saturn
Sixth planet · 9.5 AU · Last known location of Ella's mother
2 stations
Saturn — Kalpana One
Large orbital habitat in Saturn orbit. The furthest established community habitat in the solar system at the time of Book One. Getting here requires passing Jupiter. A significant journey even in The First Reach era.
LARGE
ORBITAL
Saturn — Ring Mining
Small surface or ring-based extraction operation in Saturn's rings. Likely harvesting water ice, silicates, and other materials. May warrant upgrade to Medium: the rings are an extraordinary resource base that an expanding solar civilization would aggressively exploit.
SMALL
SURFACE
STORY NOTE — Saturn is the last known location of Ella's mother. The existence of two active stations here means there are people, records, and trails. Book Two territory.

Uranus & Neptune
19.2 AU / 30.1 AU · Beyond The First Reach
No settlements
No habitats established. The edge of the explored solar system in The First Reach era. What lies beyond Saturn is the frontier of the frontier.
The First Reach: Settlement Summary

At the opening of Book One, humanity has established 14 stations and habitats across the solar system — from Earth orbit to Saturn. The Space Elevator and Moon Fuel Station form the backbone of the transit network. The Intrepid is the symbolic heart: the first, the boldest, and still the most famous address in space. Every person living beyond Earth owes something to what was proven there.

The outer planets beyond Saturn remain untouched. The Belt is still developing. Mars is the only planet with multiple surface settlements. Saturn is the edge of the known world — and somewhere in its orbit or rings, Ella's mother was last seen.
