Tethered orbital infrastructure anchored to Earth's surface with a large captured asteroid as counterweight. The primary gateway between Earth and orbit. All personnel and cargo transit through here.
Kalpana Two — Earth Orbit (Small)
Smaller Kalpana-class habitat in Earth orbit. Early-generation station, likely predating The Intrepid. Serves as overflow housing, transition accommodation, or specialist facility.
The Intrepid
The flagship habitat of The First Reach. Earth's first permanent orbital settlement. Kalpana-class cylinder, capacity 5,000. Over ten years old at the time of Book One, it was the launchpad for every settlement that followed. Named for the boldness of the endeavor. The story begins here.
Kalpana Two — Earth Orbit (Medium)
Second, larger Kalpana Two habitat in Earth orbit. The growing demand for orbital living has necessitated a second station of this class near Earth. Handles increased population and traffic as the solar system opens up.
NOTE — The Intrepid is the only habitat the reader sees directly in Book One. The two Kalpana Two stations and the Space Elevator Station are referenced world-building context establishing that Earth orbit is now genuinely busy.
The Moon

Moon Habitat — Helium-3
Surface habitat built around Helium-3 mining operations. He-3 is a critical fuel source for fusion power throughout The First Reach. A working community of engineers, miners, and families. Not just an outpost.
Moon — Fuel Station
Orbital refueling depot above the Moon. Processes He-3 lifted from the surface and supplies outbound ships heading deeper into the solar system. Strategic chokepoint for all inner-to-outer system travel.
Mars
Fourth planet · 1.52 AU · Most developed frontier world

Mars — Colony
The first and largest surface settlement on Mars. A full community: permanent residents, schools, infrastructure. The most mature frontier habitat beyond Earth orbit in The First Reach era.
Mars — 2nd Colony
Second Martian surface settlement, still growing. Likely established after the First Colony proved the model worked. Separate location, possibly more specialized in agriculture, manufacturing, or resource extraction.
Mars — Fuel Station
Orbital refueling depot above Mars. Critical waypoint for ships continuing outward to the Belt, Jupiter, and beyond. Mirrors the Moon Fuel Station's role. The solar system's infrastructure relies on these nodes.

Ceres — Belt HQ
Dwarf planet · Asteroid Belt · Primary Belt foothold

Ceres — Belt Headquarters
The administrative and operational hub for all Belt activity. Currently classified Large, but this is under revision. A Medium classification may better reflect the early state of Belt settlement at the start of Book One. Growth to Large is inevitable as the Belt economy matures.
UNDER REVISION — Consider downgrading Ceres Belt HQ to MEDIUM for Book One. The Belt is still early-stage. Growth to LARGE across the series arc gives the setting room to breathe and expand.
Outer Solar System
Jupiter
Fifth planet · 5.2 AU · Gas giant · Outer system anchor

Jupiter — Kalpana One
The most remote large habitat in The First Reach. A full Kalpana-class cylinder in Jovian orbit, the proof that permanent large-scale human presence in the outer solar system is possible. A bold, expensive, prestigious posting.
Saturn

Saturn — Kalpana One
Large orbital habitat in Saturn orbit. The furthest established community habitat in the solar system at the time of Book One. Getting here requires passing Jupiter. A significant journey even in The First Reach era.
Saturn — Ring Mining
Small surface or ring-based extraction operation in Saturn's rings. Likely harvesting water ice, silicates, and other materials. May warrant upgrade to Medium: the rings are an extraordinary resource base that an expanding solar civilization would aggressively exploit.
STORY NOTE — Saturn is the last known location of Ella's mother. The existence of two active stations here means there are people, records, and trails. Book Two territory.
